Writing Diversity Statement in Perfect Ways

A one-page document that explains the experiences and commitments of a person relevant to the diversity is known as a diversity statement. Most of the universities require diversity statements. This diversity statement will show that this particular university is looking for those candidates who are supportive of their mission. There are three main values to add in a diversity statement. First of all, you will have to provide such values that are relevant to diversity. Secondly, you will have to provide information about your experiences. Thirdly, you will have to explain your future plans. Some essential tips to write a diversity statement are explained below;

1) Tell your story

Sometimes, there is a possibility that you will have to face some obstacles. If you have overcome these obstacles, you should try to explain the ways that you have adopted to overcome these obstacles. On the other hand, if you are privileged to overcome these obstacles, it is also necessary for you to acknowledge it. You should also try to explain your educational journey in a diversity statement. In the diversity statement, you should also try to explain how you have overcomes different challenges to achieve your educational goals.

2) Focus on commonly accepted understandings of diversity and equity

There are lots of commonly accepted understandings of diversity and equity-like race, gender and social class etc. While writing the diversity statement, it is also necessary for you to consider these understandings of diversity. Along with these understanding of diversity, it is also necessary for you to explain commonly recognized forms of oppression.

3) Avoid false parallels

While living in a society, there is a possibility that you will have to face issues of exclusion from society. If you have experienced these issues of exclusion, you can explain these issues in the diversity statement. On the other hand, if you have not personally experienced these issues of exclusion, there is no need to explain those challenges that are faced by other members of society. Its reason is that if you are explaining these false parallels in your diversity statement, it means that you are making false parallels. This explanation of the false statements lasts a bad impression on the minds of the audience. In simple words, you should try to write about only those things for which you have enough knowledge and experience. Anyhow, you can cite statistics of these issues in order to make your points in the diversity statement.

4) Write about specific things

If you have helped other students or other members of society in your life, you can also add these specific events in your diversity statement. If you have not helped anyone else during your life, you can help anyone else and write it in your diversity statement. Sometimes, there is a possibility that you have to experience a rewarding experience in your life. This rewarding experience can also be added to the diversity statement.

5) Highlight the events you have participated in

During your academic career, if you are involved in some specific programs, it is also necessary for you to explain this participation in the programs in the diversity statement. This involvement in the programs can be in three different forms like you can participate in these programs as a mentor, you can also participate in these programs as an advisor and you can also participate in these programs as a mentor. While participating in these programs, your role either is positive or negative. It is also necessary for you to explain the nature of your role in these programs.

6) Write about your commitment to work

There are also some specific ways in which you can also contribute. It is also necessary for you to explain the specific ways in which you are willing to contribute. For example, if there are some pre-existing programs on the campus, you can show your willing that you are interested in these programs. On the other hand, if you are interested in models of other campuses, you can also show your willing that you are interested in the models of other campuses.

7) Modify your diversity statement

Sometimes, there is a possibility that you will have to send your diversity statement in more than one campus. While sending your personal statement in more than one campus, you should try to modify your personal statement according to the requirements of these campuses. Its reason is that the requirements and missions of different campuses are different. On the other hand, if you send the same diversity statement in all the campuses, you will not be considered as an eligible candidate in all the campuses.
